During the Capcom Next 2024 showcase, Capcom has announced that it's now working on a new Resident Evil game. However, Capcom stopped short of confirming whether it's Resident Evil 9.

"We're making a new Resident Evil. It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil] 7," said director Koshi Nakanishi. "But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial." Nakanishi went on to explain that he couldn't give any further details, but can't wait to share more when the time is right.

Previous games that Nakanishi worked on include Resident Evil 5, in which he worked as a designer, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and Resident Evil 7: biohazard, all of which he directed.

Rumors about the next Resident Evil game have been swirling around recently. The upcoming title will reportedly have an open-world structure built with the RE Engine, similar to Dragon's Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wild. Wild. The same reports also indicated that the game will be formally announced later this fall, and is scheduled to release sometime in 2025.

In the meantime, Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are reportedly the next games in the franchise that will be getting remakes.
